Myanmar Earthquake of March 28: Ling Jiou Mountain's Urgent Relief Efforts Bring Warmth to Affected Regions

A strong earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28th, and Venerable Master Hsin Tao, the Myanmar-born Founding Abbot of Ling Jiou Mountain, immediately expressed his deep concern. Taking swift action, he contacted local Buddhist monks, and starting from the early morning of March 30th, LJM established temporary shelters along the Yangon-Mandalay transit route to provide porridge and meals to nearby affected residents. Furthermore, beginning April 1st, emergency supplies such as dried food, medicine, and body bags, urgently needed in the affected areas, were transported from Myanmar (including local procurement), Taiwan and Thailand to deliver care and aid to those suffering.

The powerful earthquake of March 28th, with its epicenter located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, unleashed violent tremors that shook the region. Homes were instantly reduced to rubble, tragically claiming countless lives. In the ensuing devastation, the ruins revealed scenes of helpless gazes, trembling hands, and figures desperately awaiting assistance. The area continues to experience persistent aftershocks, and widespread power and internet outages are further hindering rescue efforts. Severe damage to numerous roads necessitates detours, making the journey from Yangon to Mandalay a significantly extended and challenging route for relief operations, now taking over 9 to 10 hours.

The Ling Jiou Mountain Buddhist Order's Yangon Meditation Center and Naung Mon Samanera School in Myanmar remain safe and sound. Venerable Master Hsin Tao, the founder, immediately directed, "Wherever there is suffering, that is where we go." At the first moment, he led a lamp-lighting prayer ceremony at the Golden Buddha Hall of Sheng Shan Monastery, calling upon the community to jointly chant mantras and dedicate the merits, praying that all those affected may swiftly be relieved of suffering and find peace. Furthermore, an emergency "Myanmar Disaster Relief Project" was promptly established to initiate the first phase of disaster relief operations.

Emergency Relief Efforts: Ensuring Love and Hope Reach Every Corner

Given the extensive damage to local infrastructure, immediate aid became a crucial lifeline. Prior to the arrival of large-scale relief supplies, Ling Jiou Mountain’s on-the-ground team initiated action on March 30th near the earthquake's epicenter in Mandalay, Myanmar. They erected temporary shelters to provide free porridge and warm meals, ensuring that residents of over a dozen villages did not go hungry. For the affected people, these warm meals not only satisfied their immediate hunger but also offered a much-needed sense of stability and comfort amidst the hardship.

Ling Jiou Mountain volunteers have been diligently working to overcome various obstacles in assessing local needs and determining the most urgently required supplies. In Yangon, they secured essential provisions including temporary tents, rain covers, mosquito nets, and infant formula. Beginning April 1st, these supplies were personally distributed to the affected regions. Simultaneously, a second batch of aid is being transported from Taiwan and Thailand to provide further assistance to survivors. Every expression of compassion is being translated into practical aid, safeguarding the basic necessities of life for the disaster victims and ensuring they receive the vital support they need.

From Relief to Ongoing Care: Accompanying Survivors Towards the Future

"Compassion knows no borders, and kindness is the light of hope." This powerful earthquake has not only destroyed homes but has also cast countless families into despair. Ling Jiou Mountain has not only initiated immediate disaster relief but will also dedicate itself to long-term reconstruction and spiritual care, assisting survivors in rebuilding their lives and reigniting the flame of hope.

Where Suffering Arises, Compassion Will Be Present

Ling Jiou Mountain appeals to all to unleash their kindness and generosity, joining together to send blessings and support to the people of Myanmar in their time of profound need. In the face of this relentless natural disaster, may the continuous relay of human goodness transform tragedy into a pivotal moment for love and hope to flourish.
